Umrah Meaning: What It Is and How It Differs From Hajj

If you have searched for umrah meaning, you probably want a clear answer first and the details second. Here is both. Umrah is a voluntary pilgrimage to Makkah that a Muslim can perform at any time of the year. This guide explains what the word means, what the rites are, how Umrah differs from Hajj, and how to prepare.

What does Umrah mean?

In Arabic, umrah (عمرة) comes from a root meaning “to visit.” In Islamic law it means visiting the Kaaba in Makkah and performing a specific set of rites in a state of ihram. People often call it the “lesser pilgrimage” because it is shorter than Hajj and is not tied to fixed dates.

The rites of Umrah, step by step

  1. Ihram. The pilgrim makes the intention at the miqat (the boundary points around Makkah), wears the ihram garments (two white sheets for men, modest ordinary clothing for women), and begins reciting the talbiyah: “Labbayka Allahumma labbayk.”
  2. Tawaf. Seven circuits around the Kaaba, counterclockwise, starting from the Black Stone.
  3. Two rakahs and Zamzam. After tawaf, the pilgrim prays two rakahs near the Station of Ibrahim, if possible, and drinks Zamzam water.
  4. Sai. Seven trips between the hills of Safa and Marwa, starting at Safa and ending at Marwa.
  5. Halq or taqsir. Men shave the head or trim the hair; women trim a fingertip’s length. This ends the state of ihram and completes Umrah.

The rites themselves usually take a few hours, though crowds and distance can make the day longer.

Umrah vs Hajj: what is the difference?

Umrah does not replace Hajj. A Muslim who is able to perform Hajj still owes it, even after many Umrahs.

Is Umrah obligatory?

Scholars have two main views. The Shafii and Hanbali schools consider Umrah obligatory once in a lifetime for those who are able. The Hanafi and Maliki schools consider it a strongly recommended sunnah. If this matters for your own situation, ask a qualified scholar you trust.

The virtue of Umrah

The Prophet ﷺ said that one Umrah to the next is an expiation for what is between them (Bukhari and Muslim). He also said that Umrah in Ramadan is like performing Hajj in reward (Bukhari and Muslim). Many Muslims plan their Umrah for Ramadan for this reason, though it is also the busiest time to travel.

How to prepare for Umrah

  • Learn the rites before you travel. A pilgrim who knows the order of tawaf and sai can focus on worship instead of searching for instructions in a crowd.
  • Memorize the common duas and short surahs. You will recite and pray a lot. Reading with correct pronunciation makes it easier to stay present. If you want to improve, see our online Tajweed classes.
  • Handle visas and bookings through official channels. Saudi Arabia runs an official platform, Nusuk, for Umrah permits and bookings. Check current requirements before you book.
  • Prepare physically. Tawaf and sai involve a lot of walking. Comfortable footwear and steady hydration help.
  • Bring the family along in learning. Children can learn the basics of Umrah and the short surahs at home before the trip. See Quran learning for kids.
